Attic Fan Installation
A whole-house attic fan pulls hot air out of the attic and draws cooler outside air through open windows. In Northern Virginia’s humid summers, a properly sized attic fan can drop the attic temperature by 30–50°F and reduce air conditioning costs.
Whole-House Attic Fans
Mounted in the ceiling between the living space and the attic. Sized by CFM (cubic feet per minute) based on your home’s square footage. Mohammed calculates the right size, cuts the opening, wires the fan to a dedicated circuit, and installs a thermostat or timer control.

New Ceiling Fan Where None Existed
This means running new wiring from the panel or an existing circuit, installing a fan-rated ceiling box bolted to framing (standard light boxes are not strong enough), and wiring a wall switch or fan control. Full electrical job.
Replacing an Existing Fan
If the existing ceiling box is fan-rated and the wiring is sound, a swap is straightforward. Mohammed verifies both before installation — an undersized box is the most common failure point in ceiling fan installations.
Fan + Light Combo Wiring
Most ceiling fans include a light kit. For independent control (separate wall switches for fan and light), the box needs two switch legs — not just one. Mohammed runs the additional conductor if your existing wiring only has one switch leg.
Fan Repair

- Light works but fan does not (or vice versa) — usually a wiring issue at the switch or the fan’s internal wiring harness
- Sparking or burning smell — stop using the fan immediately. This is a wiring fault or a failing motor, and it is a fire hazard. Call an electrician

Fan Installation FAQ
Can I install a ceiling fan where I have a light fixture?
Usually yes, but the ceiling box almost certainly needs to be replaced. Light fixture boxes are rated for 15–50 pounds of static weight. Ceiling fans exert dynamic (moving) forces that require a fan-rated box anchored to framing. Mohammed replaces the box as part of every fan installation.
What size attic fan do I need?
The general rule is 1 CFM per square foot of attic floor space, with adjustments for roof color and pitch. A 1,500 sq ft attic needs roughly a 1,500 CFM fan. Mohammed measures and recommends the right size.
Do ceiling fans actually save money?
Yes. A ceiling fan costs about 1 cent per hour to run. The wind chill effect lets you set your thermostat 4–6°F higher while feeling the same comfort, which reduces AC costs significantly in Northern Virginia summers.
Can you add a remote control to my existing ceiling fan?
